ABSTRACT

The article addresses the question of integration and dispersion in theatre. Theatre is the art of representation, so it is presented as unified and integral, starting with Aristotle's principle of three unities, through Shakespeare, Calderón de la Barca's The Great Theatre of the World or Erwin Piscator and Walter Gropius's model of total theatre. With the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, theatre changed, not only by itself but also by necessity, becoming diffuse and imprecise. It broke with one of its foundations: the encounter between spectators and actors in a designated space. Theatre ceased to be a place of performance and the stage was moved to nowhere. Digital theatre assumed an anti-Aristotelian order;the classical principle of the three unities of place, time and action was broken. However, even though the pandemic shook the foundations of theatre and theatre used all the means offered by new technologies, the fundamental concepts of theatre and theatrical space were not abolished. © 2022 Lodzkie Towarzystwo Naukowe. ABSTRACT

This paper provides an overview of the development and current status of digital mental health in Ireland. It will present the results of the work carried out on this topic as part of Interreg Europe's eMEN project. This charts the trajectory of digital mental health developments in Ireland across three phases: pre-, mid-, and post-COVID-19 pandemic. Before the pandemic hit, the field of digital mental health was gradually growing through a combination of bottom-up and top-down activities. The pandemic triggered a rapid shift to the online provision of mental health services, which often involved remote consultations via video platforms. As we come out of the pandemic, the focus has shifted to consolidating these pandemic-driven changes, as well as continuing to build on existing initiatives. This article outlines the key elements of each phase, as well discussing certain key issues that should be factored into healthcare policies and provision. These include quality assurance frameworks designed to cover a range of digital mental health applications, as well as new ontological frameworks to characterize the emerging ecosystem of technology-based care in the post-pandemic "new normal”. ABSTRACT

The aim of the study is to analyze the relationship between 1) perceived organizational support from the university, and 2) student involvement in the study process described from the perspective of the concept of knowledge-sharing culture. In addition, we analyze the impact of these factors on the student's average grade obtained in the last academic year. The study presented here focuses on the interaction of the following factors: 1) perceived organizational support from the university, and 2) student involvement in the study proc-ess. The concept of the culture of knowledge-sharing is a theoretical basis for the analysis. As a result, the research explores the impact of the factors (1 and 2) mentioned above on the effectiveness of the student's academic development. Based on the literature review, it is being assumed that the culture of knowledge-sharing is built in a two-way process: on the one hand, the university is to support the students in their development, and on the other hand, students themselves are to show commitment to this process. However, the available literature does not clearly indicate the strength of the relationship or the directions of influence between the elements of the model. The study conducted to create this analysis consisted of two stages: the first was carried out in June 2019, the second in May 2020, after the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. This allowed for more complete conclusions regarding the interaction of factors responsible for building the academic culture of sharing knowledge. Regardless of whether students work in a classroom or in an e-classroom (remotely), the results show that the basis for their involvement is the support they perceive from universities, setting ambitious tasks for them, and accompanying them in overcoming emerging challenges. The factor modifying the relationship between university support and the effectiveness of academic develop-ment turned out to be the student's involvement in the study process.

ABSTRACT

FASTER is an H2020 research project, within the European framework, in which Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) teams, in addition to other first responders, conduct an on-theground assessment of latest support technologies. These technologies are to be used in victim rescue response situations well as for coordination and safety procedures between disaster responders in diverse types of catastrophe scenarios. The tools have been developed by technical partners of the FASTER project committee and, with the aim of assessing the tools, two pilot exercises were conducted in collapsed buildings in Spain, simulating the impact of two earthquakes. The objective is to integrate and adapt the FASTER tools in initial interventions during the search for and rescue of victims. The focus is placed on information gathering in the disaster area, among other aspects. Simulation exercises were conducted in real locations involving collapsed buildings using drones, unmanned vehicles, canine wearables, a mobile command centre, a weather station and social network analysis, with real people acting the part of victims together with human dummy figures. Through these exercises, an assessment was carried out of the acceptability, ease of use, applicability, efficiency, and effectiveness of FASTER technology. The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic during the implementation of various pilot exercises was a setback that led us to introduce a USAR Camp deployment procedure involving preventive anti-COVID-19 measures, in accordance with the recommendations of official organisations such as INSARAG and the WHO. © 2023 by Nova Science Publishers, Inc. ABSTRACT

As a global issue, Overtourism has highlighted three main things: (1) Tourism is not the cure for all socio-economic issues faced by destinations;(2) sustainability is still an issue to be overcome by the tourism industry;and (3) incremental strategies (as opposed to radical strategies) are not the way forward for the sustainability of the industry. As a result, this chapter is suggesting that new technologies (incremental strategies) could contribute to tackling overtourism, but only if substantiated with a driver of deep and meaningful changes (radical changes) such as an external shock (COVID-19, for instance). In that case, new technologies could be assimilated to an amplifier and the external shock as a driver. This conceptual chapter, based on secondary data (literature review), provides an overview of research on overtourism, and new technologies in tourism. The chapter then provides evidence that new technologies only work as enablers but not as drivers of changes. Finally, taking wedding tourism as an example, this chapter shows that as opposed to incremental strategies (new technologies), COVID-19, as an external shock, is pushing the industry towards radical changes in which technology could potentially play a significant role. This study is offering a strategy (theory) to tackle overtourism, which has not been suggested before, namely combining incremental (enablers) and radical (drivers) strategies. This approach falls under the ambidextrous management approach. © The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2021.

ABSTRACT

PurposeContinuous training in professional teaching competencies has become one of the challenges of the school of the 21st century, especially if we refer to the mastery of digital competence. The aim of this study is to analyze the degree of digital competence of secondary school teachers of different areas of knowledge during the global pandemic of COVID-19 in the Galician autonomous community and obtain data that allow us to infer whether there is an association between individual variables such as age, gender, degree, work experience and their mastery of digital competence.Design/methodology/approachA cross-sectional descriptive quasi-experimental study is performed using an accidental sample of secondary school teachers from different fields of knowledge.FindingsThe different results obtained determine that the level of knowledge and use of digital media and tools is low. There are no significant differences depending on the variables analyzed, but it is necessary to establish specific continuing education plans for the improvement of digital competence in secondary school teachers to enable the effective use and management of information and communication technologies in future professionals.Originality/valueTherefore, the findings of this study allow the development of educational interventions focused on increasing the digital competence of teachers, taking into account their individual characteristics.

ABSTRACT

The paper aims to analyze the digital transformation process's defining elements in the COVID-19 crisis. Starting from our main objective, which consists of a critical analysis of the defining elements of the digital transformation process in the conditions of the COVID-19 crisis, we formulate the following specific objectives: to analyze the contribution of external organizational factors to put into practice the new opportunities created by the organization's digital transformation;to evaluate the impact of digital competencies on the digital transformation of organizations;and to analyze the role of new technologies in developing digital competencies. We used the partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) and the bootstrapped method to evaluate the model fit, and the model was tested by SmartPLS4 software. Our research is based on information from 203 employees with authority for decision making about the digital transformation strategy in their organizations undergoing a digital transformation process. Our findings revealed that organizations, regardless of size, profile, or field of activity, are affected by changes induced by new technologies and the crisis generated by COVID-19. Therefore, formulating a digital transformation strategy must aim to minimize the risks of obsolescence and maximize the results from exploiting new digital resources. However, our results do not prove that COVID-19 crises directly and positively influence the development of digital competencies. This leads us to conclude that developing these competencies is a continuous process unaffected by disruptive factors such as crises. Instead, the development of digital competencies is influenced by new technologies. Therefore, the COVID-19 crisis directly and positively influences organizations' developing and implementing a digital transformation strategy and new technologies. The theoretical contribution of our research consists of an explanation of the role of perturbator factors, such as the crisis generated by COVID-19, in developing digital competencies and improving digital transformation. The practical contributions are dedicated to managers that should have a different approach to the negative phenomena that will be considered catalytic factors of the digital transformation and disruptive factors of the organizational climate. © 2023 by the authors.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic has in many ways promoted and accelerated new approaches to diplomacy, including the use of new technologies, digital dialogues, and other innovation. Multilateral affairs have increasingly adapted to the era of digital transformation, including the omnipresence of social media for public diplomacy, artificial intelligence and big data for strategic decision-making, and other advancements. Likewise, global governance fora of the international community such as the United Nations have paid more attention to the dark side of cyber issues, the challenges of digital cooperation, and global digital disparities. This chapter looks at the changing landscape of international diplomacy in the context of new technologies and innovation at large, taking stock of recent developments and capturing emerging trends. This chapter focuses on the recent experience in the United Nations from a practitioner's perspective, including new evidence-driven approaches to international relations, creative forms of diplomatic communication and conversations, and non-tech approaches such as cognitive and behavioral science in diplomatic practice. It argues that diplomacy needs to embrace innovation as an opportunity to co-create new solutions, nurture collective progress, and expand the greater common good of the international community. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: The purpose of the research was to examine the sociological issues related to the biographical experience of a participant in the administrative procedure in the Visegrad Group countries (the perception of public administration bodies and their organisation, current demands of the public in the field of public administration activities, providing appropriate tangible and intangible tools for officials). The secondary goal of the research was to determine the nature, significance, consequences and form of comprehensive modernisation of existing simplifications of the administrative procedure (The author understands the concept of simplification of administrative procedure as "an administrative procedure separated from the general administrative procedure and characterized by simplification of general normative solutions"). Since the scope of the concept of "electronisation of administrative procedure" does not fully include the concept of "simplification of administrative procedure", the research referred to two areas of the administrative procedure that are complementary to each other (the relationships that occur between them, including by specifying common and separate parts of electronisation of administrative procedure, e.g. in the scope of keeping and making available files of procedure in electronic form). Moreover, solutions were presented in the field of simplification and electronisation of administrative procedures in the V4 Group countries, in institutional, subjective and objective terms. Design/Methodology/Approach: The analysis of domestic and foreign legal texts was used to implement the research assumptions (general legal regulation of administrative procedure presented by the Codes of Administrative Procedure and COVID-19 regulations in the V4 Group countries). Empirical research using sociological research methods was conducted in connection with the analysis of currently applicable simplifying solutions [the author implemented a component of social research using both qualitative methods - individual in-depth interviews with adult residents with biographical experience of being a participant in the administrative procedure (20 adults - 5 from each country of the V4 Group) as well as quantitative methods - online survey with participants of the administrative procedure (120 adults - 30 from each country of the V4 Group)]. In the research, the statistical method was applied to better illustrate the effectiveness of the currently conducted administrative procedure and to answer the hypotheses regarding the legitimacy of the development of the idea of administrative simplification. Findings: The analysis shows that it is not yet possible to speak of an advanced development of administrative procedure in the Visegrad countries. The delay of the public administration in applying solutions that simplify administrative procedure is mainly due to unclear regulations and significant financial outlays needed. The above state of affairs has a negative impact not only on entities participating in the procedure but also on public administration bodies and administrative courts. Practical Implications/Originality/Value: The initiated process of simplifying and electronising administrative procedure must always take the form of comprehensive legal solutions that will allow for effective and efficient operation of public administration bodies and enable individuals to exercise their fundamental rights. Therefore, the article presents the latest difficulties related to the administrative procedure and examples of their solution.

ABSTRACT

The use of new technologies applied to teaching has led to a qualitative leap in education due to the pandemic caused by COVID-19. This chapter describes the experience of converting an intensive program that had been celebrated in person since 2014, into an online event. Thus, through a project-based learning process, students of different nationalities were able to expand their knowledge related to ethics and finance, as well as other skillsets, such as autonomous and collaborative work, working in a multicultural environment, or the development of technological and language skills. All this was possible thanks to recent developments in software and applications that allow students and teachers to collaborate simultaneously while being separated by hundreds of kilometers in different European cities. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

ABSTRACT

COVID-19 pandemic and its repercussions came as a surprise to nations including China. However, the unique central governance system of the country enhanced its ability to promulgate laws and guidelines which caused rapid changes across all aspects of its development. The result from this was a swift implementation of initiatives that ensured strict safety protocols to reduce the spread of COVID-19, generated advanced analytical technological systems to control the virus, and created new markets for some new technologies. Hence, the enormous growth of 5G contributed a lot to the economic recovery of China. Given its potential shown during the pandemic, the 5G strategy was considered as the most important attempt to face the challenges in post-COVID-19 by the Chinese government. This chapter outlines some of the structures, policy outcomes, and results during the pandemic and makes recommendations for curtailing future challenges. © 2022 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

ABSTRACT

This chapter summarises the empirical chapters, drawing out specific aspects of each chapter, including a distinction between the use of traditional methods to study new technologies and the development of innovative techniques to study evolving communication formats. I show how the studies included exemplify some key challenges in this area of using Conversation Analysis (CA), Membership Categorisation Analysis (MCA) and related microanalysis techniques to understand developing technological social interaction, including the ongoing debate about relevance of context in microanalytic studies of interaction. I conclude by considering the relevance of this research field to the COVID-19 global crisis and the ensuing shift to online interaction for numerous aspects of social and working life. Future directions include more focus on videoconferencing, as well as focus on interactions utilising medical and other app development. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved)

ABSTRACT

The paper addresses the development of cyborgization technology and the potential impact on the world of work. The first section of the paper briefly comments on the current state of cyborgization (intelligent prostheses, lenses, the use of chips, intelligent exoskeletons). In the following section, an attempt is made to initially indicate the issues that will require in-depth analysis in the context of labor law, such as the employee's right to neurological improvements and to refrain from using them, and the ownership of technological improvements in the employer-employee relationship. Finally, the paper puts forward a thesis about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the acceleration of the cyborgization process.

ABSTRACT

Economic growth and GDP growth have been dramatically affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Both indicators are the factors that decisively affect the situation in the labour market, which is currently facing major challenges. One of the challenges is aging population. The number of the working- age population is declining, which may also have a significant impact on GDP growth in the future. The main purpose of the study is to analyse past and predicted GDP growth rates and the past and predicted shares of the working age population in the selected economies. Based on the analyses, the study attempts to identify the factors that are able to stimulate GDP growth while the size of working age population is predicted to shrink in the future. In the opening section of the empirical part, a comparison of the GDP evolution in China, Russia, USA, India, Slovakia and the EU is presented. Subsequently, long-term GDP and demographic forecasts are presented. It follows from the analyses that it is necessary to introduce new technologies to replace the shrinking workforce if sustainable economic growth is to achieve. © 2022, Bucharest University of Economic Studies. ABSTRACT

AFRICAN DEVELOPMENT : The urgent need for innovation to address multifaceted and intertwined water-related challenges is becoming increasingly clear, as the public, media, and governments place pressure on the water sector across the world to drive down emissions and pollutions. Meanwhile, the water sector is often seen as less innovative than other sectors and can be slow to adopt and adapt new technologies, while water utilities around the world are keen to achieve `net zero', adoption of new technologies can be slow, costly, and inefficient. These are the views of Dr. Piers Clark, chairman of technology and innovation consultancy, Isle, who adds, "The climate crisis is unavoidable. Concrete and lasting action is required now from the water sector. The water sector is a major contributor OF emissions but has significant potential to produce a positive impact

ABSTRACT

Purpose>This paper explores digital transformation's impact on the work of owners in entrepreneurial firms. The interplay between working practices and technology is analyzed, taking into account the organizations' specific contexts.Design/methodology/approach>A multiple case study design was applied. Eight cases of entrepreneurial firms, defined as companies that bring new products and services to the market by creating and seizing opportunities, were selected, with the goal to maximize the diversity of cases. The sample includes both small- and medium-sized firms, as well as high- tech and low- tech companies in equal number. Interviews have been used to collect both quantitative and qualitative data, which was analyzed in a structured way.Findings>The digital transformation of entrepreneurial work, that is the daily work of entrepreneurs, is an evolutionary, practice-based phenomenon, rather than the result of rational design. The use of different digital tools is interrelated and depends on the characteristics, and dynamics of the surrounding environment.Practical implications>The findings of this study are relevant to entrepreneurs interested in understanding the dynamics of their working practice, to software development firms interested in entrepreneurs as customers and to institutions interested in the education of entrepreneurs.Originality/value>To the best of the authors' knowledge this is the first study which considers the interplay between digital technology and the daily activities of entrepreneurs, considered as a whole. It provides insights on how these interconnected dimensions evolve, thus contributing to understanding the work of entrepreneurs, and as a consequence the dynamics of entrepreneurial firms in the context of digital transformation of organizations.

ABSTRACT

The COVID 19 socio-sanitary crisis evidenced a digital gap between higher education teachers and students that needs to develop EdTech skills in university teachers. With the aim of analysing the current development of teacher training in digital skills for education in the 21st century, an extensive and systematic bibliographic review of national and international literature was carried out. It review considered the theorists, frames of reference and training experiences in teaching digital skills. The problem discussed in this article is the actual tendency to train teachers in instrumental and technical aspects of technology such as digital and information literacy, without delving into its more complex use as an instrument of cognitive mediation to learn to think through ICTs and digital media. Based on the analysis carried out, it is concluded that universities need to move towards a sustainable EdTech, oriented towards problem solving through collaborative environments characterized by a critical, ethical, cooperative, participatory and responsible use of technologies. A training proposal is made in EdTeach where the digital is integrated into the pedagogical task and responds to the complexity of the learning that needs to be developed in the students. © 2022, Ibero-American Association for Distance Higher Education (AIESAD). ABSTRACT

This paper presents an exploratory analysis of a of 117 news stories on the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on education and reading habits and skills. The news stories were published in the Spanish-speaking press between March 2020 and May 2021 and compiled through the Factiva database. The analysis combined critical discourse with corpus linguistics methods. The results show that compulsory digitalization, which has affected the development of reading skills, has led to new problems relating to uneven access to connectivity and technology, as well as problems relating to endemic inequalities that have affected teachers, students and families alike.
